The Houthi movement announced the death of its appointed Prime Minister in Sana’a, Ahmed Ghaleb al-Rahwi, in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a house in the Yemeni capital on Thursday evening
.
In a statement, the group confirmed al-Rahwi’s death, adding that several other ministers were also killed in the same attack during a routine workshop meeting. Their names were not disclosed, but the statement noted that others sustained critical injuries
.
This marks the first time the group has admitted to losing high-ranking officials in the Israeli airstrikes that have been ongoing for more than two years
.
Al-Rahwi, originally from Khanfar district in Abyan province, had served as the Houthis’ Prime Minister in Sana’a on behalf of the General People’s Congress party since August 2024. He previously held the post of governor of Abyan, although he was unable to assume authority there as the province remains under the control of Yemen’s internationally recognized government
.
In an immediate response, the Houthis appointed an acting replacement for al-Rahwi. Mahdi al-Mashat, head of the Supreme Political Council — the group’s top governing body — vowed to retaliate against Israel and avenge the killing, while reiterating the group’s commitment to enhancing its military capabilities and overcoming challenges, according to the Houthi-run Saba News Agency
